“Hollywood Don’t Surf”, the Sam George documentary chronicling 50 years of Tinsel Town’s attempts to make surf-themed movies, may have played its title off an epic line of dialog from the movie “Apocalypse Now” (“Charlie don’t surf!”), but when viewed, as it will be on a warm September evening at the bluff in Paradise Cove, it takes on a much deeper meaning. Screened for a local crowd overlooking many of the same beaches where such corny flicks as Gidget, Beach Party, The Sweet Ride, Big Wednesday and Pointbreak were filmed, the title, however tongue-in-cheek, reaffirms the Malibu community’s passionate connection to this remarkable stretch of coast—a passion that no amount of Hollywood exploitation can diminish. Case in point: all proceeds from the sale of our exclusive “Hollywood Don’t Surf” t-shirts will go directly to the Paradise Cove Fire Brigade. The perfect way to support the community while letting the rest of the world know that indeed, Hollywood don’t surf…and that’s fine with us.
